2025 Red Ribbon Week

Posted Date: 10/24/25 (09:21 AM)

Dear Families,

Next week we will observe Red Ribbon Week at our middle school. Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s oldest and largest drug prevention awareness campaign, held annually from October 23rd-October 31st. It is a time to come together as a community to celebrate making safe, healthy and positive choices

What is Red Ribbon Week & why does it matter?

Red Ribbon Week began in the mid 1980s after the tragic death of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena. Citizens began wearing red ribbons to honor his sacrifice and raise awareness about the impact of substance abuse. Today, it is a national movement uniting schools, families, and communities to support healthy, drug-free lives. The red ribbon symbolizes our shared pledge to make good choices, resist negative influences, and support one another in staying safe and well.

Focus on Vaping & Nicotine

While Red Ribbon Week addresses all forms of drug use, vaping and nicotine have become particular concerns for youth. Many young people see vaping as safer than smoking, but it still carries health risks- including addiction, lung damage, and effects on mood and focus. Families are encouraged to talk openly about the dangers of vaping and help make children informed, healthy choices.

Tips for Parents & Guardians

  • Open the Conversation. Ask your child what they know or hear about vaping and drug use

  • Share Facts. Youth are less likely to try risky behaviors when they understand the real dangers.

  • Be a Role Model. Your habits and choices set a powerful example

  • Encourage Positive Activities. Sports, art, volunteering, and hobbies strengthen confidence and belonging

  • Reach Out Early. Contact your child’s School Counselor or the resources above if you notice concerning changes.

With your support, we can make Red Ribbon Week a meaningful and empowering experience for our students. Together, we can help them make safe, healthy, and positive choices every day.

Thank you for your support!
